Order bumps and one-click upsells: the revenue lever that doesn't need more traffic

Average order value is the one revenue lever that doesn't need more traffic. Two things move it reliably: an order bump on the checkout page, and a true one-click upsell after payment.

Most South African creators run neither, because the tools we use don't support them properly for our local payment gateways. Here's what they are, how to pick the right offer, and how to run both in Rand on Payfast and Paystack.

1. The order bump

An order bump is a small, instant win for your buyers that sits on the checkout page right beneath the main offer, with a simple checkbox to add it to the order.

Seems silly, but that little sucker can boost your revenue ~30% for the same amount of traffic. It lifts AOV without adding extra clicks or needing extra traffic. It works because buyers are already willing to buy, so an add-on is an easy win.

You just need to offer the right thing at the right time.

The rule for choosing a bump

Ask: what's the very next friction your buyers will hit while implementing the thing they just bought?

The bump should be tightly connected to the exact moment of purchase and priced at roughly 20-35% of the core offer. It should feel like, "Since you're doing X, this makes it faster/easier today."

For example, say you're selling a fitness membership:

  • Checkout: Sign up for my super effective "Get Ripped in 30 Days Club" membership (R997)
  • Bump: BUT ALSO! Here's my Grocery-List Pack that makes getting ripped even more effective, only now, and only R297

You had me at "but also". If I want to get ripped in 30 days, I'd better stop eating mac and cheese five times a week. Looks like this reasonably priced offer will fix that immediately.

2. The one-click upsell

A true one-click upsell comes after payment. As in a "Yes, I want this now" button, not a second checkout.

You offer an upgrade that meaningfully amplifies the core result without duplicating it: concierge onboarding, done-for-you assets, advanced automations.

Running both in South Africa

I built both into CheckoutJoy. Order bumps and one-click upsells that work natively with Payfast and Paystack, in Rand, with no plugins or workarounds in between.

See it live

On Thursday 1 October at 10:00 SAST I'm setting up an order bump and a one-click upsell funnel live on CheckoutJoy, in Rand, for Payfast and Paystack. I'll process a real bump-upsell checkout flow and walk you through copying the setup for your account.

One-click upsell funnels that work in SA and in Rands. What a time to be alive.
